COFO 2010

Los bosques son esenciales para el desarrollo sostenible. Si bien este punto de vista es ampliamente compartido, existen todavía grandes lagunas en nuestros conocimientos para comprender de qué manera los bosques contribuyen a los medios de subsistencia, a la sanidad, a la educación, al agua y a muchos otros ámbitos orientados a los objetivos de desarrollo acordados a nivel internacional. ¿Qué es lo que la sociedad espera de los bosques y cuál será su función en el desarrollo sostenible? ¿Qué equilibrio deberíamos establecer entre los bosques para beneficiar a las poblaciones, mitigar el cambio climático y promover la conservación de la diversidad biológica? ¿Pueden agravarse los incendios forestales bajo los efectos del cambio climático? ¿De qué manera el caudal de las aguas de los bosques puede ser afectado debido al clima cambiante? ¿Existen nuevas fuentes de financiación para los bosques y de qué manera los beneficios que proporcionan pueden ser distribuidos de manera equitativa y amplia? ¿Incluso si tenemos las respuestas a todas estas preguntas, hemos sabido comunicarlas bien? El Año Internacional de los Bosques 2011 brindará una ocasión única para promover el programa forestal y la comunidad forestal podrá hacer el mejor uso de éste. ¿Está Ud. listo? Estas preguntas captarán la atención de los participantes del 20° período de sesiones del Comité Forestal (COFO) que se llevará a cabo en la Sede de la FAO en Roma, Italia, del 4 al 8 de octubre de 2010.

Semana Forestal Mundial 2

Por segunda vez, el COFO se celebrará conjuntamente con la Semana Forestal Mundial – una serie de reuniones y eventos patrocinados por la FAO y sus instituciones y organizaciones asociadas. Los eventos de la Semana se desarrollarán entorno a temas fundamentales del COFO y aspiran a arrojar más luz sobre las cuestiones prioritarias y a alentar debates más profundos. Los resultados de estos debates contribuirán, de ese modo, a las negociaciones del COFO, ayudando a los miembros a adoptar decisiones fundamentadas y proponiendo respuestas viables a las preguntas antes formuladas. La Semana Forestal Mundial también es una oportunidad para compartir los últimos conocimientos tecnológicos e informar sobre las principales realizaciones y logros.

Una iniciativa innovadora de la Semana Forestal Mundial será la conferencia científica internacional sobre los Mecanismos económicos emergentes: Repercusiones sobre las políticas forestales y la gobernanza del sector (5-7 octubre), organizada conjuntamente por la Universidad de la Tuscia (Italia) y la FAO, con el apoyo de la IUFRO (Unión Internacional de Organizaciones de Investigación Forestal). Gracias a los dos grupos de debate sobre gobernanza forestal y sobre la reducción de emisiones derivadas de la deforestación y la degradación de los bosques (REDD-plus), con la participación de los jefes de los departamentos forestales y de eminentes científicos, el evento debería contribuir a la eliminación de las limitaciones disciplinarias tradicionales y a la promoción de un diálogo científico y político permanente.

World Forest Week - October, 4 - 8 October 2010

Forests are key to sustainable development. Although this is a widely held view, there are serious knowledge gaps in understanding how forests contribute to livelihoods, health, education, water and many other areas targeted by internationally agreed development goals. What does society expect of forests and what will be their role in sustainable development? What balance do we need among forests for people, climate change and conservation of biological diversity? Will forest fires become worse as a result of climate change? How will water flows from forests be affected in a changing climate? Are there new sources of finance for forests and how can the benefits of forests be shared widely and equitably? Even if we have the answers to these questions, are we communicating them well? The International Year of Forests 2011 will offer a unique opportunity to further the forest agenda and the forest community should make the best use of it. Are we ready? These questions will capture the attention of the Twentieth Session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO), that will be held at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy from 4 - 8 October 2010.

World Forest Week 2

For the second time, COFO will be held in conjunction with World Forest Week - a series of meetings and events sponsored by FAO and its partner organizations and institutions. The events of the Week will be organized around the key topics of COFO and intend to shed more light on key issues and allow for a more detailed discussion. The outcomes of these discussions will thereby contribute to the negotiations of COFO, helping members take informed decisions and finding solid answers to the above questions. The World Forest Week is also an opportunity for sharing state-of-the-art knowledge and informing on major accomplishments and achievements.

An innovative initiative of the World Forest Week will be the international scientific conference on Emerging Economic Mechanisms: Implications for Forest-Related Policies and Sector Governance (5-7 October). co-organised by the University of Tuscia (Italy) and FAO, with the support of IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations). By organizing two panel discussions on forest governance and on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD-plus) with participation from heads of forestry and lead scientists the event is expected to help in removing traditional disciplinary boundaries and fostering a continued science-policy dialogue.
